Beyond Perception · Where Is the Sound?

A single sound, in a different direction every minute: in front, hard left, hard right, on the diagonals and behind. Direction is given by the tiny difference in the time the sound reaches each ear (at most 0.66 ms), by the far ear lying in the head's shadow, and by a slight darkening of sounds from behind. Close your eyes and try to point at the sound. In this model front and back are easily confused. Headphones recommended. A listening practice with no claim of any effect.

Liner notes

Body
Cluster drone · 165 Hz
What do you hear?
tonal · even · narrow

A single layer; generated on this device every time it plays.

How is this sound made?

  1. Cluster drone−13.5 dB

Cluster drone · root 165 Hz, 2 oscillators

  • Spatial movement: sounds change position around your head; listen on headphones. This is not a binaural beat.
  • Reverb: room, 12% mix

In the room you can listen to each layer on its own, change its settings and save it as your own recipe.

Sound is generated on this device in real time; no files are downloaded from a server. There is a 10 s fade-in at the start and a 0 min fade-out at the end.

Compare with another sound

Hear both at the same loudness; drag the slider to the middle and they blend.

Mixed in the middle, these two sounds would create an unlabelled binaural beat: the slider crosses the middle with a short crossfade.

B: neighbours on the map

8 trials, half of them the same sound; get at least 7 right and the difference is audible. The result stays on this device.

What do we know, what don't we know?

S · Soundscape, no claim

No health or mental-effect claim at all; it is simply a soundscape.

This session isn't linked to any claim of effect.

A session's level is the weakest of its linked claims; it is never raised by a strong but unrelated claim.
