Planet Orchestra
Choose planets, scale time: each planet sounds once as it completes its orbit. The ratio of the rhythms is the ratio of the orbital periods.
Set up the orchestra
The rhythm is the data itself: the ratio of the intervals is the ratio of the orbital periods. The starting positions are not data; they were staggered so the planets do not all start at once. The pitch is an assignment, not data: the inner planets are high, the outer ones low (the periods span a factor of 680, too wide for the audible range).
How it was built
The Solar System's periods come from NASA's planetary fact sheet (NSSDCA), TRAPPIST-1's from the 2021 measurements of Agol and colleagues. The orbit of the fastest selected planet is scaled to the time you choose, and the others lengthen in the same ratio. The periods of TRAPPIST-1's neighbouring planets lie near simple ratios (b and c near 8:5, c and d near 5:3): the seven planets form a resonant chain.
