Traditional / experimental practice

Threshold V · The Second Gate

The entrance to the second act: the familiar binaural tone and a low noise, with a warm drone beneath. Over a few minutes a fine, high texture slowly opens above; the beat descends from 10 Hz to 8 Hz and climbs back to 10 Hz at the end. First notice the sounds of your own room, then give your attention to a single layer. An experimental ritual; you can stop at any time.

Sound is generated on this device in real time; no files are downloaded from a server. There is a 15 s fade-in at the start and a 1 min fade-out at the end.

Compare with another sound

Hear both at the same loudness; drag the slider to the middle and they blend.

Mixed in the middle, these two sounds would create an unlabelled binaural beat: the slider crosses the middle with a short crossfade.

8 trials, half of them the same sound; get at least 7 right and the difference is audible. The result stays on this device.

Sound protocols and out-of-body experiences

An experimental listening ritual; not a scientific claim, and it makes no claim of astral travel or of consciousness leaving the body.

What do we know?

  • Out-of-body experience is a described neurological phenomenon; research links it to a failure to integrate bodily sensory information at the brain's temporo-parietal junction.Blanke & Arzy 2005

What don't we know?

  • Evidence gapThere is no controlled evidence that sound leads to astral travel or that consciousness separates from the body.

A session's level is the weakest of its linked claims; it is never raised by a strong but unrelated claim.
