The World of Two Ears · The Spinning Bell

A gong hanging in front of you is struck every fifteen seconds. For the first minutes it stays still; then it starts to turn on its cord: first one turn every five seconds, then every four, finally every two. When its face turns towards you the sound comes straight at you; when its edge turns it spreads to the room's walls and widens. Its direction and pitch never change. Headphones recommended. Synthesised, not recorded; there is no claim of any effect.

Liner notes

Strikes
Gong ×4 · 128 Hz
What do you hear?
swelling · dark · tonal

4 layers, one sound engine; generated on this device every time it plays.

How is this sound made?

  1. Bell−12 dB

    Gong · 128 Hz, 7 strikes

  2. Bell−12 dB

    Gong · 128 Hz, 7 strikes

  3. Bell−12 dB

    Gong · 128 Hz, 7 strikes

  4. Bell−12 dB

    Gong · 128 Hz, 10 strikes

  • Spatial movement: sounds change position around your head; listen on headphones. This is not a binaural beat.
  • Reverb: hall, 18% mix

In the room you can listen to each layer on its own, change its settings and save it as your own recipe.

Sound is generated on this device in real time; no files are downloaded from a server. There is a 2 s fade-in at the start and a 0 min fade-out at the end.

Compare with another sound

Hear both at the same loudness; drag the slider to the middle and they blend.

Mixed in the middle, the partials of these two sounds would create an unlabelled beat (4-40 Hz): the slider crosses the middle with a short crossfade.

B: neighbours on the map

8 trials, half of them the same sound; get at least 7 right and the difference is audible. The result stays on this device.

What do we know, what don't we know?

S · Soundscape, no claim

No health or mental-effect claim at all; it is simply a soundscape.

This session isn't linked to any claim of effect.

A session's level is the weakest of its linked claims; it is never raised by a strong but unrelated claim.
