Deep Sea

A descent in seven parts from the surface to the deepest places in the ocean and back: waves and bubbles, the sunlit zone, the twilight, the midnight zone, the abyss and the trench. In the Guided Journey the descent flows without a break. A representational synthesis, not a hydrophone recording; there is no claim of any effect.

Why this order? The order is depth. The first stage is the surface: the dive from above the water, then the sunlit zone down to 200 meters, where the swell of the waves and the bubbles are. The second stage is darkness: the twilight at 200-1,000 meters, the midnight zone at 1,000-4,000 meters, the abyss at 4,000-6,000 meters; in each zone the sound of the water mass darkens and sparse rumbles come from afar. The third stage is the bottom and the return: the trench below 6,000 meters, then the climb back above the water, passing a zone every 45 seconds. The upper edge of the water mass falls from 1.6 kHz to 230 Hz; the loudness stays the same from part to part.
