Where do chakra frequencies come from?

A traditional or spiritual practice, not a scientific claim.

The concept and the lists

In yogic and tantric traditions of Indian origin, chakras are described as energy centres of the body; their number and qualities vary from text to text. Lists assigning frequencies to them are modern spiritual interpretations.

Three kinds of list are common: the "cosmic octave" set, which moves the rotation periods of the planets and the Earth into the audible range by octaves; lists that distribute Solfeggio tones across the seven chakras; and lists that pair chakras with musical notes such as do-re-mi. For the same chakra, the lists give different frequencies.

The set in Frekans Studio

The Chakra Journey uses Hans Cousto's cosmic octave set: for example 194.18 Hz for the root, an octave multiple of the Earth day. The set rests on the idea that moving a period into the audible range by octaves creates a link to that phenomenon; this idea has not been tested.

Scientific status

The effect of frequencies on chakras has not been scientifically tested, which is why this content carries a ✦ T (traditional/spiritual) label. You can try the listening as a ritual or a practice of curiosity.

What does the evidence say?

A spiritual practice from various traditions; not a scientific claim. The school behind the frequency set used is stated.

What do we know?
The chakra concept comes from spiritual traditions of Indian origin. Sets that assign frequencies to chakras vary between schools; there is no agreed list. The set used in the app comes from Hans Cousto's "cosmic octave" school: mostly octave multiples of periods such as the Earth's rotation, lunar phases and orbits (e.g. the Earth day, 194.18 Hz, for the root).
What don't we know?
The effect of frequencies on chakras has not been scientifically tested. There is no evidence that transposing a period into the audible range by octaves creates any connection to that phenomenon.

Frequently asked questions

Which chakra does 432 Hz correspond to?
There is no standard mapping; different lists give different answers. In the cosmic octave set, 432 Hz is not one of the chakra tones.
Which list is correct?
None has been scientifically validated; the choice depends on which tradition you want to follow. What matters is that the source of the set used is stated clearly.
